Interesting facts and milestones from the tournament's legacy.
Brazil holds the record for the most World Cup victories, with 5 titles (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002). Their legend, Pele, is the only player in history to have won the trophy three times (1958, 1962, and 1970).
The record for the most goals in a single tournament seems unbeatable: France's Just Fontaine scored 13 goals in just six matches in the 1958 World Cup. The all-time top scorer is Germany's Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 goals across four tournaments (2002-2014).
The original trophy, the Jules Rimet Cup, was stolen twice. The first time was in England in 1966 (found by a dog named Pickles), and the second time in Brazil in 1983. It is believed the latter was melted down and never recovered.
The fastest goal in World Cup history was scored by Hakan Şükür of Turkey, just 11 seconds into the third-place match in 2002. The oldest goalscorer is Cameroon's Roger Milla, who scored at the age of 42 in 1994.
